"Habitat Kicks Off Ayos Bahay Challenge"

About 650 families from Taytay, Rizal received shelter repair kits last September 25.

Taytay, Rizal – After the series of torrential rains that ravaged our country, Habitat for Humanity Philippines launched the Ayos Bahay Challenge (ABC) as a part of its 25th anniversary year-long celebration. Through ABC, Habitat aims to distribute shelter repair kits and home improvement kits to 25,000 families across the country to respond to disasters and to help them prepare their homes for disasters.

About 650 families from Taytay, Rizal received shelter repair kits last September 25. Previously affected by the southwest monsoon of Typhoon Haikui last August, these families were in need of construction materials and tools that can help them fix their homes to more livable conditions.

“Sa sobrang lakas ng ulan nung nakaraang habagat, sobrang binagyo ang bahay namin,” said Criselda Dula of Sakbit, Lupang Arenda, Taytay. “Hindi kami makapasok ng bahay dahil sa sobrang baha. Nasira pati yung dingding namin…” (Because of the strong rains of the southwest monsoon, our house was damaged. We couldn’t enter our house because of the flood. Even our walls were destroyed…”

“One of our goals for the Ayos Bahay Challenge is to demonstrate how easy it is to repair homes and make them durable during disasters,” said Love Dorero, project lead of the Ayos Bahay Challenge. “We have also included a financial literacy campaign in ABC to show to our homepartners that they can be prepared to deal with disasters when the next storm comes.”

“Next month, we will be in Naga, Bicol,” shared Charlie Ayco, HFHP CEO and Managing Director. “We hope to distribute in all areas in the Philippines, particularly those that are prone to disasters. We encourage everyone to be a part of the solution to this challenge.”

HFHP is eyeing distribution in Quezon City, Marikina City, and Navotas City in Metro Manila; Pangasinan, Pampanga, and Tuguegarao in Northern Luzon; Laguna and Cavite in Southern Luzon; Iloilo and Cebu in Visayas; and Cagayan de Oro and Samar in Mindanao.

Current partners of ABC are Bison Management Corporation, Eastwood Sales Philippines, LBC, Leafar Commercial Corporation, Credit Suisse, Advantek, DN Steel Group- of Companies, Eterton Multi-Resources Corp., James Hardie, Jardine Distribution, NKD International Trading Corp., Orco Trading, amd Republic Chemical Industries.
